My eggless pancakes really do taste like the real thing, I had my first anaphylactic shock from pancakes when I was 14 and it took me a long time to even try an eggless version, now I can’t stop eating them! To me these are proper English pancakes…thin and crispy and are perfect for Shrove Tuesday!

Cooking time: 1 minute per pancake (approx 30 seconds each side)

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Makes 4 pancakes

The Ingredients:

  • 4oz Plain flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 2  tsp baking powder
  • 9fl0z whole Milk
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • oil for cooking

The Method:

  1. Sift the flour in to a bowl
  2. Add the sugar and baking powder
  3. Mix the water and oil with the milk
  4. Add the milk mixture to the bowl and mix with a whisk or folk until it looks like a batter, don’t over mix though (it shouldn’t have bubbles)
  5. Add approx 2tsp of oil to a non stick frying pan, you may need more if your pan is bigger, make sure you move the oil around the pan as it heats until oil has touched the whole bottom of the pan (this will prevent it from sticking), continue to heat the frying pan until it’s smoking hot (be careful though, it’s very hot)
  6. Add one ladle of the pancake mixture to the frying pan and move it quickly around the pan until it’s covered the bottom
  7. Lift the edge of the pancake and when it looks a little brown, flip it to cook the other side
  8. When the bottom of the pancake is slightly brown serve and add your favourite topping (mine is simply just lemon juice and sugar)

    I am so glad i found this this morning! my boy cant have eggs, wheat, milk and soya!! so i will try this with his gluten free flour and he has a ‘special’ pepti junior formula milk (which i can use in cooking) so i will try this recipe.     k so i tried it and they came out well ……… edible. They were really soft though so i added a tad bit more flour cuz the first one like stuck to the pot, maybe i used too much milk too eh not certain,but all in all it was a victory for the no eggie pancakes!!

    Thank you so much for this. My 18 month old daughter is allergic to eggs, and I didn’t want her or her older siblings to miss out on pancake day. They went down really well – every bit as good as eggy pancakes, especially by the time they were liberally sprinkled with sugar and lemon! We’re all absolutely stuffed now! I tried frying them in both butter and oil – both were fine, although I found they stuck less with oil. I doubled up the recipe (as there are 5 of us) and found it easily made 10 6″ pancakes. Yummy, yummy recipe, thank you! That’s one less thing my daughter has to miss out on!

    I used this recipe since we were out of eggs. I had to add more flour, though, as it was more liquid than batter. Overall it was a good experience. I’m always happy to find recipes that compensate for my constantly running out of, for us, essential cooking ingredients.

    Just tried this recipe as my wife and daughter, although not allergic to eggs, just don’t like them! So I decided to try this egg free recipe as a surprise breakfast this morning and we all loved it! My wife actually prefers this to traditional pancakes. Plus I used Splenda instead of sugar and this worked really well so I will also be able to use for my father-in-law who is diabetic.     Oh my… completely stuffed after making and eating these pancakes! Made them using Doves Self Raising Gluten Free flour as son has Coeliac Disease as well as Egg Allergy.     I’ve just made these with my 2 year old. Besides everything else that goes with the obvious worries of your child having an allergy, I was upset she’d never be able to properly enjoy cakes, pancakes, and my home made cookies. On pancake day we tried a shop bought powder mix that said egg yolk only but still my daughter spat it out (luckily she’s good at that, people offer her cake she gets excited bites it, then it must itch or hurt and she spits it all out). So my sister-in-law found your site and gave me the address. It’s taken me to now to use it because I’ve been attempting (failing) to diet, but after an episode of Peppa Pig flipping pancakes and then a couple of hours of “mommy pancakes” I gave in. I just want to thank you because we both LOVED them and it meant I could even give some to my 7 month old and not worry!!
    And I mean it really really Thank You! I’ve always hoped prayed she’d grow out of it but now I’m not so worried because of this site. Next stop cupcakes I think? And to think she’ll be able to eat a birthday cake now using your hic sponge recipe is brilliant!

    My chickens have quit laying so I was out of eggs. We also ran out of milk! I used dry milk powder as well as sucralose. My only complaint is they didn’t make enough! Ill have to triple the recipe next time. I did them smaller and on the griddle. Wonderful recipe. Thank you. :)

      Are your pancakes too thin? And is your pan smoking hot with enough oil? and are you using a non-stick pan? They should flip like normal egg pancakes.

    The pancakes are great. Use gluten free flour and Oatley milk as I have dairy/wheat/egg intolerant children. I manage 6 pancakes out of a batch and they get gobbled too quickly!

    I really didn’t like this recipe, this is unfortunate because i was really excited to make them. I followed everything but found that 1. the pancake was very hard to turn over (floppy) and 2. they didn’t taste nice at all.
    Since this has very good reviews i can’t imagine why it didn’t work for me. Any suggestions would be great, I’m sure it was a minor slip up – maybe even the temp I cooked at? Thank you anyway.

      I’m sorry they didn’t work for you, was your pan smoking hot and did it have enough oil? Is the bottom of the pancake cooked enough so it’s loose to flip? Also what flavour did you add after they were cooked…I find that if I add sugar and lemon to any pancakes they taste good.

    I’ve never had a no egg pancake before – you’ve converted me almost ;)
    I didn’t have any eggss in the house but I really wanted pancakes I came across this by accident but im glad I did
    The first one didn’t go so well I didn’t put enough oil in the pan so it kinda stuck and ended up looking more like scrambled egg on my plate… but it was still delicious and the second ended up like a thick pancake so I started to get really confused – but, as expected, it was scrum my

    They’re still really nice but the mix has started to thicken in the bowl and instead of being runny like when I first made it its now gloopy…is it meant to do that?… and how do I fix it

      I think it will be the bi-carb reacting and it will be starting to rise, if you try adding a drop more milk in to it and give it a stir, it should be ok. I’m not sure I’d leave it too long though, it won’t last as long as an pancake egg mix.

    Sorry it did not work I tried it with butter instead of oil then it wasn’t good it looked like scrambled egg :/ but then I tried it with sunflower oil even that did not work.I’m typing while my finger is burning from touching the hot water after cleaning the pan.I put sugar and I melted some chocolate (SOME of the chocolate turned black so I threw it away). Before I started I read the reviews 99.8 good (1 bad review & me). The only person who liked it was my 2 year old daughter who eats anything! My 3 year old ate it but when I offered him another he refused.Im sorry for this 4/10.

    Every recipe I’ve tried sticks to the pan, I’ve tried less oil / more oil but still I have to scrape them off.

      Are you using a non stick pan for the pancakes? I’ve found the key is plenty of oil and a very hot pan (apparently that’s the key for egg pancakes too?!)

    Like many others, we had no eggs in the house. Also, I had ran out of milk, but as my wife uses soya milk we used that instead.

    The preparation and cooking went well, but the pancakes were quite thick, the batter didn’t want to level out in the pan, and worst of all, they tasted odd. Even with the sugar and lemon on top.

    Think it was the taste of the baking powder overpowering everything else.

    Maybe with a bit of tweaking it would be to our taste, and has promise compared with other egg recipes I’ve tried in the past, so I will not give up on them, but I’m glad I didn’t do these on 4th March (the day of pancake day/Shrove Tuesday 2o14) and have a chance to perfect it a bit. Any suggestions on what I can do.

    My wife prefers thick American style pancakes, so I need to know what to do to make them more like that.

      Hi Simon,

      For American pancakes try using less milk, the baking powder is needed to help them rise, but maybe try mixing it in with the milk first before adding it to the bowl. If you want thinner pancakes then try adding a little more milk, you have to move the pan quite fast to level them out, again if you use a little more milk it will move faster.

    If you miss out on nice treats just because you can’t eat eggs, don’t like them, are trying to lose weight or even save a bit of money – here’s a brilliantly simple recipe and an equally brilliant blog I stumbled on today.
    My 4 year old very first words this morning, who’s highly allergic to eggs, were
    “Oh-oh! Oh-oh! Oh-oh!”
    We wondered what had happened, then she burst into the bedroom and shouted – “IT’S PANCAKE DAY!!!”
    Well, I looked for an egg free recipe and found your blog. What a treat!! They were truly lovely – lighter than eggy ones (cheaper too) and after a bit of tinkering we got the recipe as we liked. Brill for my little girl, and lower in calories, especially if you try semi skimmed rather than whole milk (if you need to consider that sort of thing). We left the sugar out so they could be used for savoury or sweet and used rapeseed oil in the batter. She wolfed two down – it was lovely to see her being ‘part’ of something she’s never been able to be before… Highly recommended. Will DEFINITELY be trying out other recipes on “No Egg!” Thanks a million, Jude :-)

    I have been converted to your ‘egg-free’ pancakes! Like most people, we ran out of egg – as every Tuesday is ‘pancake day’ at ours ;-)

    I used spelt flour and semi skimmed milk, it came out a treat! They cooked as soon as they hit the pan, I think that is the main thing, the (non stick) pan must be hot! (A good spatula also helps).
